Customers and investors are showing more interests in eco-packaging that save raw materials, avoid food waste and enhance recyclability. According to Hakan Grubb, CEO of Sweden-based Xylophane, “The need for sustainable packaging is obvious. It’s a regulatory requirement in some places, but we also see consumer demand for it.” Xylophane have developed a barrier material for packaging that decreases food waste by enhancing shelf lives.

Though this sector has started attracting some attention but it still is far away from being recognized. There is big volume of plastics involved everywhere so the market is quite large but the sustainability packaging market’s share is absolutely minimal. Since the field is still in its infancy stage there’s no silver bullet that has emerged. A number of new materials are still in development stage and according to panelists, each advancement needs to be minutely studied for the effects from its creation to disposal. The most important thing is that it has to be as good in terms of barrier properties and should not be more expensive than what it’s replacing.

However ecopackaging companies are not likely to get any premium on their products because consumers and manufacturers aren’t willing to pay extra to be green. Consumers too aren’t likely to adopt ecopackaging if it appears less attractive than what they’re used to. Most of the traditional biodegradable packaging don’t look very good. Do the preparation

The acquisition of Sun Microsystems by IBM, the talks are in progress, would help IBM in more than one way. At one end, this acquisition would fetch huge benefits for IBM’s services and software businesses, the core business areas of IBM, and on the other hand it would boost IBM hardware revenues and profitability. However the benefits in hardware sector is likely to be dwarfed by the supposed gigantic growth in services and software business.

IBM is best known as a software and services company with a computer hardware division. It is also manifested in its 2008 revenue structure. Last year 79% of IBM’s revenue were generated from services and software, which was 82% of its pre-tax income, while hardware represented only 19% of revenue and 9% of pre-tax income. Therefore this deal will strengthen IBM's core business area along with the hardware business. The deal is likely to give IBM a major chunk of the high-end server and storage hardware markets and enhanced access to certain customers, particularly in the telecommunications industries and financial services.

Java will be the key acquisition for IBM
Apart from the hardware business, Sun possesses some strategic software asset, as the likes of the Solaris operating system, Java programming language, and several open source technologies, including the MySQL database management suite. All of them except Java will hardly make any significant contributions to IBM’s software or services revenue.

Almost all major middle-ware and enterprise application vendor has built many important applications using Java and they plan to build more further. Most big corporations rely on Java for some part of their core business processes. Despite all this importance and value, Sun has really struggled to turn Java into revenue and profit as it earned only $200M from Java, an increment of mere 0.5% from the year before. Unlike Sun, IBM is in excellent position to monetize that asset. Java would help the company create a competitive advantage over some of its largest services and software competitors.

IBM's software & services business likely to see spur growth
Java has been integrated in IBM's all software and services business. It has been a leading provider of Java-related software and services and earns billions of dollars. The websphere business, that has been one of the pillars of IBM software group’s fast growth over the last decade, is based on Java. Other main IBM’s services businesses, including service-oriented architecture practices, and parts of its SAP and Oracle applications practices have also been tied to Java. In simple words, by owning and guiding Java, IBM would have a genuine claim as being the best place to provide Java software and services.

The problem with Sun is that it lacks the channels to sell its Java expertise and software, while IBM already covers the Java market. In such situations, owning Java could enhance its win rate in this massive market and draw billions in additional revenue and profits.

It is the need of the hour...need of the environment...need of the mankind to save energy...to check the emission of green house gases. Following the path of many other countries, India has decided to launch a project to phase out the energy consuming traditional incandescent bulbs in favor of compact fluorescent lights. It is quite an important step to tackle issues like climate change and carbon emissions.

According to the Indian Energy Ministry, government will distribute 400 million compact fluorescent lights in the next three years to replace existing incandescent bulbs. A CFL consumes one-fourth of the energy as the bulbs. Andhra Pradesh and Haryana will be among the first states to receive the fluorescent lights.

Fluorescent light bulbs have enormous potential to save energy particularly in India. India is a huge country and one-fifth of its total energy is consumed by the household lighting. Currently majority of the household bulbs are energy hungry incandescent. This project would help India save 10,000 megawatts of electricity per year and will help India reduce 55 million tons of carbon emissions per year.

The high cost has been the main obstacle in the popularity of CFL bulbs. It costs about four times as much as traditional bulbs. But they are efficient and cheaper in the long run because they consume much less power and the bulb life is far longer than the incandescents. So now the Indian government will offer the CFLs for about 30 cents that is one-fourth of their cost in the market.

The movement to phase out the incandescent bulbs is becoming global as countries like China, Australia, Britain, etc are considering measures to switch to energy-efficient lamps.

It can be considered as the first step of India on the Action Plan on Climate Change adopted last year. This project put the focus on harnessing renewable energy and improving energy efficiency. India is in the list of top five emitters of greenhouse gases, and due to the rapid economic development India's emissions are rising and could significantly contribute to global warming in future

Marvell Technology Group Ltd., a company that makes chips for a range of high tech products, communications equipment, cellphones, etc, has planned to launch a new kind of computer. The company has named it “Plug Computers”. Like its name this device would be plugged in to home electrical sockets and would be of socket like size. Yet it will have enough power to manage user's digital media and enable them to view it over the Internet from outside the home.

In today's digital world we store each and every information in the digital form as texts, images, videos in digital cameras, cellphones, notebooks. In such a way we are storing our personal information in dispersed style – in the form of files, that make them inefficient as well as risky. Losing a laptop or mobile phone will cost us losing a precious photo or video.

Marvell is promoting the "plug computers" as a perfect solution for this. The idea is to have an ultra-small computer plugged into an electrical socket. Despite the small size the plug computer will have enough processing power and network connectivity to manage and serve media stored on an attached thumb-drive or hard drive. You can access the plug computer over your home network, enabling you to get at your files from wherever you needed in your house.

However this idea is not new and Apple's Time Capsule works a little like that. It acts like a central repository for data by wirelessly backing up all the connected Macs. HP's MediaSmart Servers are a host of "smart" external hard drives connecting a PC via USB and store your media longterm, and serve it to connected TVs and audio systems without needing the PC's intervention.

Marvel is planning to miniaturize all this technology and make it small and convenient. The company is also emphasizing on the green aspects as well by maintaining the eco friendliness of the plan. Plug computers are supposed to draw less than 5W of power that is much less compared to a PC running as a media server.

Company is planning to launch it on a small and economic-enough scale. Marvell will be sourcing the chips while partner companies make the software & hardware. The price is interesting targeted at $50 that makes this idea different from other tech solutions.

Beat the Heat...Beat Global Warming...with Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans and air-conditioners have been the main cooling equipment for decades. First came the fans and then the air conditioners. Air conditioners dominated the cooling equipment sector but it should not be promoted due to the enormous consumption of electricity and supporting the causes of emission of greenhouse gases.

Almost one-sixth of U.S. Electricity is consumed by the air conditioners per year. During peak periods in scorching summers this figure raise to 40%. The ongoing trend of rising global temperatures and intense heat waves can increase the consumption further.

The rapidly increasing energy demand in U.S. is creating more environmental pressure. Almost 30% of the country's greenhouse gases & 70% of the acid rain is caused by the electricity generation from fossil fuels. Half of the US energy is produced from coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel. The power plants generating electricity from coal produce two-third of sulfur oxide emissions; one-third of nitrogen oxide, main component of acid rain and smog; one-third of the country's mercury emissions, which settle in waterways and contaminate the food chain; and one-third of carbon dioxide emissions, the primary global warming reason.

If comparing the figures given in previous two paragraphs, one can easily estimate that how-much the use of air-conditioners is responsible for global warming.

Just reverse are the ceiling fans, not only a quiet, elegant and inexpe nsive means but an excellent energy savers. A ceiling fan at maximum speed uses 50 to 75 watts per day, as much as an incandescent bulb, that is one-tenth as much as a medium size air conditioner. Running 12 hours a day cost almost $1.50 a month, much less compared to $25 for an air conditioner.

Also the ceiling fans work on a different principle. Ceiling fans, one of the popular electric fans, cool by creating light breezes that evaporate moisture from the skin. On the other hand air conditioners consume huge amounts of energy to push the heat from indoor air and blow it outside. The circulating air generated by ceiling fans feels 9 degree cooler. Combined with other energy efficient means, ceiling fans can yield even greater savings.

The electricity generated for the average household in US expel 13,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, 77 pounds of sulfur dioxide, and 47 pounds of nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere each year. Isn't this our duty to do our bit to save our environment? And that too without sacrificing comfort, and saving some dollars.
